Lockheed and Martin AMTAP or Advanced Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program is a Registered Apprenticeship Program that’s goal is to prepare its participants for careers within space operations in Colorado and Alabama. The Program seeks out young people who have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity and do not require any kind of electronics education background and provides students a secondary choice to college after graduation.
Technical apprenticeship programs like AMTAP are part of Lockheed Martin’s enterprise-wide workforce development initiative. The initiative, begun in 2018, aims to create 8,000 work-based learning opportunities and to invest $50 million in educational programs across the United States by 2023. At the beginning of 2021, Lockheed Martin was on its way to that goal, having created more than 5,300 workforce development opportunities and investing nearly $7 million into its STEM and Vocational Scholarship Programs.”
Lockheed and Martin have a long history in Alabama and the locations within the state serve as the company’s flagship locations for its hypersonic technology development department. The program hopes to continue to build its program in the area and recruit more young people out of high school as they continue to build their talent pipeline.
