The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office recently awarded San José City College a grant of almost $500,000 to join forces with Santa Clara County Elmwood Correctional Facility to provide tech apprenticeships to the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated. The initiative will help to fund programs like SJCC’s Computer User Specialist apprenticeship that is linked to Google's IT support department.

"The partnership will address the needs of under-represented incarcerated and formerly incarcerated groups by offering an affordable, high-quality, accelerated education. It will prove its value by placing students into careers that we will measure for success."

Lena Tran, SJCC Vice-President of Strategic Partnerships and Workforce Innovation.

The program will promote the learning of innovative technical skills as well as real-world experience with building and releasing products. In SJCC’s Google apprenticeship participants will be challenged to analyze, troubleshoot, and evaluate existing network systems, such as local, wide, and cloud networks. Apprentices will have to complete 144 instructional classroom hours to graduate but there will be no prerequisites to apply and join the program.

SJCC hopes to have around 120 apprentices graduate from the program in the upcoming year and will provide graduates with workforce training, career workshops, career counseling, job development, and on-the-job training placements as well as employment opportunities.
